The Insurance Authority (IA) today (20 October 2017) alerted the public to two fraudulent websites with the domain names of “http://star-ins.com” and “http://www.star-gicl.com”. The aforesaid websites purport to be the official websites of two authorized insurers of Hong Kong, Starr International Insurance (Asia) Limited (Starr) and Tugu Insurance Company Limited (Tugu). Both Starr and Tugu have confirmed that they have no connection with the fraudulent websites.
The case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. Anyone who has provided personal information to the websites or has conducted any insurance transactions through the websites should contact Starr at 3765-5333, Tugu at 2824-6828, the Police at 3660-7412 or any local police station.
Any company carrying on insurance business in or from Hong Kong must be authorised by the Insurance Authority under the Insurance Ordinance (Cap. 41). The full list of authorised insurers in Hong Kong can be found on the Register of Insurers on the IA website.
