The Insurance Authority (IA) and the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) today (12 September 2025) co-hosted a featured event in support of the Hong Kong Green Week1. Themed as “Bridging Finance and Future: The Insurance Industry as a Pillar of Climate Resilience”, the event gathered expert speakers from the insurance sector, government, academia and the commercial sector to discuss the pivotal role of insurance in enhancing climate resilience. It drew over 180 insurance practitioners and stakeholders, both in person and virtually.
Mr Stephen Yiu, Chairman of the IA, highlighted in his opening remarks the importance of fostering dialogues among stakeholders, “Given the scale and complexity of climate-related risks, it is incumbent upon regulators and policymakers to engage proactively with the insurance industry, to strengthen our city’s climate resilience through robust risk assessment, improved risk management frameworks underpinned by a deeper understanding of the social value of insurance.”
The IA has been fostering regulator-industry-academia collaboration to apply advanced climate risk research and modelling in insurance for enhancing insurers’ underwriting capability and facilitating product innovation. At the event, representatives from the IA, the Task Force on Green Insurance of the HKFI and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) gave an overview of the Climate Modelling Project, a collaborative initiative spearheaded by the IA. Based on claims data shared by insurers, this project is expected to provide valuable insights for insurers to develop innovative product solutions aligned with sustainability goals and enhance climate risk assessment capabilities.
The seminar also featured a panel discussion exploring how cross-sector synergy will help identify business opportunities and strengthen climate resilience. It was followed by two sharing sessions by speakers from the Civil Engineering and Development Department and Drainage Services Department, offering invaluable insights into government-led climate change research on integrated shoreline management and flood management strategies aiming at mitigating climate-related risks.
